"20,000 leagues under the sea" (1997; michael caine as captain nemo)

worse than the 1954 version, partly because of its liberal themes:
the protagonist, french professor arronax, in one of the opening scenes, opines that man should not be master of the earth.
in the next scene we see american racism against a handsome, polite black man; the american bystanders do nothing about it; it is the visiting frenchman, arronax, who does.
then one of the characters rails against whaling.
and so on.

"eye of the dolphin" '06 movie starring carly schroeder

the usual liberal themes: the protagonist, 14-year-old alyssa, is the product of out-of-wedlock sex; her father james, a marine biologist in the bahamas, is shacking up with his current girlfriend when he learns he has a daughter; james is a jerk who has things to learn from alyssa; the opinion is expressed a few times that dolphins are at least as smart as humans, and probably smarter; a character says, "follow your heart"; and capitalist developers are the bad guys. but because we've come to expect this, because the movie isn't strident, and because the scenery is nice, the themes are palatable and I recommend this disney-esque movie to kids. a sequel (with a different cast) is in the works.
